‘CJBrown57’ and ‘sumhunt’ win 2011 Turkey Photo and Video Contest

Simpsonville's Andy Williams earned the top prize in the 2011 Turkey Photo Contest with this photo of two trophy birds.

Winners to receive Official Sportsman gear, South Carolina Sportsman magazine subscriptions

After allowing a month for readers to enter their turkey photos into the SouthCarolinaSportsman.com photo and video gallery, the three-day voting period was decisive. Andy Williams’ photo showing him with two toms was the top vote getter, and C.J. Brown’s video of two toms gobbling before the season was the most shared and viewed vid.

Each user wins a one-year subscription to South Carolina Sportsman magazine and a $25 gift coupon to the Sportsman Outdoor Store good for all manner of Official Sportsman Gear.

In the video contest, Brown (who goes by “CJBrown57”) managed to harvest one turkey in South Carolina this year, but his ‘Hot Gobbling Turkeys’ video was made before the season came in.

Brown lives in Edgefield, and shot the vid near Cowden Plantation with a buddy while scouting for turkeys one day.

“We were in our street clothes when we walked down a woods road, made some calls, and got a great show,” Brown said.

Two toms approached them and proceeded to strut and gobble like their lives depended on it, and Brown was able to make a nice video of them.

“This footage is as good as any I see on television,” Brown said. “And the video is a little different because it does not end with a bang.”

In the photo category, Williams (aka “sumhunt”) took the win with his ‘Looking for love in all the wrong places’ photo.

The Simpsonville hunter did not get to turkey hunt until April 26, when friend Chris Colley told him he would call turkeys for Williams at his family’s hunting land. The hunt began at 5:15 a.m., but they had no luck for the first two hours of calling and were about ready to call it quits when two hot toms showed up.

“We heard those birds at 7:45 a.m., and after we called to them I bet it took them all of three minutes for them to come into our decoy spread,” Williams said.

When the toms were in range, Williams shot the larger tom first and the second tom flew up and landed about 50-yards away. The second shot was as good as the first, and Williams’ collected his two birds that made for the contest-winning photo titled “Looking for love in all the wrong places.”

The biggest tom weighed 22 pounds, had a 10 1/2-inch beard and 1 1/4-inch spurs, while the second tom weighed 19 pounds, had a 10 1/2-inch beard and 7/8-inch spurs.

The extra-wide grin Williams sports in the photo is because he was hunting on his Grandmother’s land and, though she had recently passed away, he felt like she was sharing her turkeys with him.
