Coyote hunting tips

James Ash of Denton took this 35-pound female coyote on Jan. 24, 2012.

• Check the rules in your area. Be aware of any last minute changes. Obtain prior permission to hunt on the land. It is a good idea to consult your local wildlife officer before hunting.

• Study the coyotes in the area you plan to hunt. According to James Ash, coyote packs in the Uwharrie Mountains cover a range of about a square mile or two. Coyotes are adept at living close to humans. People often spot them in towns and suburban areas.

• Coyote hunters must master the arts of camouflage and scent control. Use a Ghillie suit. Avoid smelly laundry and bath soaps. Try to hunt with the wind in your face. One whiff of you and the coyotes will leave the area.

• Use a howl to locate any coyotes in your hunting zone. If they answer, switch to something like a wounded rabbit or mouse call to lure the predators into range. James Ash said that when a coyote answers it would circle downwind from your position. Prepare your field of fire and be alert.

• Bring a long-range varmint rifle with a suitable scope and bipod. Practice on the range to zero in your chosen weapon, and know how to use it at various ranges.
