Upstate urban hunts

Deer don’t live just in rural areas anymore, and hunters who don’t at least take a look at some of South Carolina’s suburban or urban areas might be missing out.

Opportunities often go unnoticed or may be forgotten. We are creatures of habit. We find a location to hunt and get locked into it and don’t make the effort to try new locations. Here are a few opportunities that have been available in recent years and bear follow-up as you look forward to a new deer season.

• Croft State Park in Spartanburg, which covers 7,054 acres, has scheduled special archery hunts to reduce overpopulation in recent years. A small fee has been charged for application in the past. Details are available from the park at 864-585-1283.

• The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers opened 15 recreation areas around Lake Hartwell last season for archery and small-game hunting. The acreage in these locations ranged from 19 to 410 acres, with 11 in South Carolina and four in Georgia. A couple of these require special permits. Ranger Jess Fleming (888-893-0678 or 706-856-0335) is the contact for information and permits.
