Tower in place, along with safety regs
An unmanned archery range is now open from 9 a.m. until sunset at the Lynches River County Park in Coward. The S.C. Department of Natural Resources opened the facility on Monday December 6. “We’re hopeful the range will get a lot of use with the growing popularity of archery and more youth taking up the sport through the National Archery in the Schools Program,” said Lt. Billy Downer, an SCDNR Hunter Education Coordinator. The range regulations state that archers under the age of 16 should be accompanied by an adult.
The flat range will have targets from 20 up to 50 yards for use, and bows on the beginner range must have a draw weight of 30-pounds or less. The 15-foot elevated tower will offer targets from 10 to 40 yards set up in a wooded area. Regulations state that no broadheads are allowed on the range and that a restraint harness is required when using the tower.
Funding for the range required several partners including SCDNR, Florence County Council, Florence County Park and Recreation Department, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service program known as the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act.
