Leupold optics package, Hughes box blind is winner’s reward
A Granville County hunter is the grand-prize winner in North Carolina Sportsman’s Bag-A-Buck contest for the 2013 season. Chase Watson of Oxford, “baseball1cw” on NorthCarolinaSportsman.com’s forums, killed the buck last Oct. 3, and a few days later, he entered it in the contest, which is presented by Leupold. His name was drawn on Feb. 14 as the grand-prize winner from among the hundreds of entries.
Watson’s prize package includes an optics package from Leupold – rifle scope, binoculars and rangefinder – and a Hughes Box Blind from Hughes Products in Wallburg. He will pick up his prizes at the Dixie Deer Classic, scheduled for Feb. 28-March 2 in Raleigh.
Watson had his big 10-point buck patterned late last summer during the early archery season. A 24-year-old surgical technician at Granville Medical Center, Watson set up, basically, to get in the buck’s way. The deer was moving between a pine thicket and a milo field – along with plenty of does – and on Oct. 3, he slipped an arrow through his vitals.
“I’ll bet I had over a thousand (trail-cam) pictures of him” in the three weeks before he killed him, Watson said. “It seemed like he was coming in about every two hours and hanging out. He was going between a pine thicket and a milo field, and I just cut him off.”
Watson was shooting a Bowtech compound bow with Beeman carbon arrow and a 2-bladed Bloodrunner broadhead. He had seen the buck several days before, but it never got closer than 60 to 70 yards from his stand. His patience paid off later that week.
Watson was already planning on attending the Dixie Deer Classic to have his buck officially scored. The deer, a typical 10-pointer, has a symmetric rack with tall tines and a 19-inch inside spread.
