Maddox Bevell found his prize buck on the Neuse River, 1/4 mile downstream of where he shot it.

Wayne County buck went for a swim

Maddox Bevell, 13-years-old, killed a 9-point buck in full velvet on Sept. 10, 2023 in Wayne County, NC. He shot the deer with his bow shortly before the end of shooting light. His family joined him to search for the buck until 11 p.m. That’s when they realized the deer had fled into the Neuse River.

Early the next morning, Bevell and his dad launched their boat on the Neuse to search for the deer. They found it in a log jam 1/4-mile downstream.

Bevell was drawn as the winner of our Bag A Buck contest for the month of September.

He wins a free 1-year subscription to Carolina Sportsman Magazine, a Mini Maglite, two packages of Lowcountry Seasonings and an 18-ounce Yeti Rambler. He also goes, along with all other Bag A Buck entrants, into the running for our Grand Prize, which includes a 3-year subscription to Carolina Sportsman Magazine and a 2-day, two-person hunt at Cherokee Run Hunting Lodge in Chesterfield, SC.
