Lee County trophy is first Bag A Buck contest winner

Jason Boyd's great buck from Lee County was drawn as the first monthly winner in the Bag A Buck contest.

Jason Boyd thought his hunting buddy was walking behind his stand the afternoon of Sept. 17 — that’s how heavy the footsteps sounded. But Boyd, “jasonb1988” on SouthCarolinaSportsman.com, turned and instead saw a huge buck coming through a stand of oaks toward his climbing stand.

The buck stopped broadside at 60 yards, and Boyd drilled it with a 180-grain bullet from his .30-06 Savage rifle. When he got to the buck, he discovered an 11-point, 220-pound monster.

“I have never seen such a big-bodied deer in person, alive or in the skinning shed,” said Boyd, who entered the Lee County specimen in South Carolina Sportman’s Bag-A-Buck contest, presented by Leupold. Boyd’s entry was drawn as the winner of the first monthly contest; he will receive a $25 gift certificate to the Sportsman Outdoor Store and a year’s subscription to the magazine.
Boyd’s and all other entries will be eligible for the grand prize: a Leupold optics package (rifle scope, binoculars, rangefinder; a blackpowder rifle from Nichols Store in Rock Hill; and a 2-person, 1-day hunt at Cherokee Run Hunting Lodge in Chesterfield. It will be presented at the 2013 Palmetto Sportsman’s Classic.
