Hybrid lock-on stands

A lightweight, lock-on style stand and a set of break-down, climbing sticks can make a deer hunter tremendously mobile.

Until the last few years, hunters who used lock-on style stands were limited to hanging one stand in one location, and that stand was likely affixed for the season.

With the advent of lighter and equally strong materials, companies have created stands that offer hunters who prefer lock-ons the comfort and concealment with the mobility of a climber-style stand.

Where climber-style stands are limited to trees with trunks free of limbs, lock-on style stands may be placed among the limbs and on trunks that grow at awkward angles.

With the goal of hiding and the need to blend in, the use of lightweight and efficient, mobile stands with climbing sticks is a great resource to the hunter. In addition, the use of climbing-sticks that fold and fit into a pack offers hunters the ability to use stands affixed to different trees — the sticks being portable and able to be used at multiple locations.

Further, climbing sticks make climbing a tree safe, easy, and speedy. Muddy Outdoors (gomuddy.com) offers a line of climbing sticks and lock-on style stands that are lightweight and mobile for the public-land or traveling hunter or the hunter that wants multiple stand locations but doesn’t want to hang multiple stands.

When used together, a hunter can climb quietly to a reasonable height and have the option of either leaving the sticks or stand for a return hunt or removing them based upon hunting conditions. This flexibility in stand usage allows security, increased mobility and opens options for using trees that might exclude a climbing style stand.
