Dixie Deer Classic on record pace after first day

More than 200 deer were scored during the very first day of the Dixie Deer Classic, making it one of the most-successful Fridays in show history.

More than 200 deer were scored during the first day of the Dixie Deer Classic, making it one of the largest Fridays in the history of the event.

There still are two days remaining in the event, although deer must be entered into the contest by 6 p.m. Saturday (March 5) to be eligible for category awards.

The Dixie Deer Classic is being held this weekend at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. A weekend pass to the show is $10.

Among the category leaders after the first day were:

Non-hunting – Reid Daniel, 141 2/8, Granville County
Youth and Female – Ashely Honeycutt, 160 2/8, Ashe County
Bow (typical) – Andrew Jordan, 147 6/8, Orange County
Bow (non-typical) – Daniel Schnack, 161 3/8, Franklin County
Gun (typical) – William Baugher, 155 4/8, Virginia
Gun (non-typical) – Monk Perry, 159, Wake County

Scoring begins Saturday at 9 a.m. and continues through 7 p.m. Sunday’s show hours are 9 a.m. through 5 p.m.
