149 coyotes killed during Carolina Coyote Classic

Hunters in the 6th Annual Carolina Coyote Classic killed 149 coyotes this past weekend.

107 hunters participated in contest

This past weekend, 107 hunters from both Carolinas participated in the sixth annual Carolina Coyote Classic. They killed a total of 149 coyotes, officially weighing in 137 at the American Legion Post 76 in Stanly County, N.C.

With strong support from VisitStanly.com and a host of sponsors, the crew at 704 Outdoors put on another great tournament that continues to grow in participation and number of coyotes killed. Last year saw 88 hunters from the Carolinas compete in the competition, killing 67 coyotes.

This year’s winners in the Coyote Derby are as follows:

First place

Team Merciless, made up of hunters Steven Davis and Colt Minton, brought 17 coyotes to the scales. Davis is no stranger to this tournament. He won it last year with 14 coyotes. This time around, he and Minton walked away with $2200 cash, a trophy, a Southernized decal, shirts, and Nose Jammer Predator Spray.

Second place

Team Garner/Newton, with hunters Terry Garner and John Newton killed 14 coyotes, winning $1320. They also won a trophy, a Southernized decal, shirts, and Nose Jammer Predator Spray.

Third place

Team MFK killed 11 coyotes. Teammates Jamie Terry and Jason Groseclose won $880. They also took home a trophy, a Southernized decal, shirts, and Nose Jammer Predator Spray.

Fat Dog Contest

In the Fat Dog Contest, a side pool for the biggest male ‘yote, Team MFK took first place with a 41.77-pound coyote. Adding to their Coyote Derby 3rd place prizes, their Fat Dog winnings included some great prizes. They won $268, and a Thompson Center Compass .243 with custom Cerakote finish. They also won .243 ammunition, a FoxPro Fusion digital caller, a Big Game Treestand, a Gotta Kill It to Grill It t-shirt, a Southernized decal, event shirts, Nose Jammer Predator Spray, and a trophy.

Second place in the Fat Dog Contest was Team Thompson Creek Outfitters. Their 40.23-pound coyote won $161 for Robert Ratliff and Jason Wilson. They also won a Sniper Hog Lights 50LRX Rifle Hunters Package, a McDonald’s gift certificate, a Yeti Bucket, a FoxPro digital caller and hat, a Frostie Bottom Treestand single cushion, a Southernized decal, event shirts, Nose Jammer Predator Spray, and a trophy.

Team Garner/Newton added to their  Coyote Derby prizes with a third place finish in the Fat Dog Contest. They won $107, FoxPro calls and hat, a Santee Fishing Rod sand spike, a Southernized decal, event shirts, Nose Jammer Predator Spray, and a trophy for their 40.12-pound dog.

Other side pots

Another extracurricular part of the overall contest is the Big Female Side Pot. It was won by Grant Watson and Chris Langley of Team Metalwerx. They killed a 39.79-pound female and won $216.

The final category, the Little Dog contest, was won by Team Merciless. This added $250 to their Derby winnings.

Late Sunday night, John MacPherson of 704 Outdoors TV said they truly appreciate all the help from VisitStanly.com, all the sponsors, and the participants for making this another great tournament. And he said they’re already looking forward to making next year’s even better.

“Now it’s time for a little sleep. Tomorrow, we’ll start working on next year’s tournament,” he said.
