Don’t miss gator tag deadline

The deadline to apply for an SC gator tag is July 15.

Application period ends July 15

South Carolina’s 2023 alligator hunting season doesn’t begin until this September. But the deadline to apply for a tag is quickly approaching. The application period began on June 1 and will end on July 15 at 5 p.m.

Hunters wishing to participate in the tag lottery must apply through gooutdoorssouthcarolina.com.

Each application carries a $10 nonrefundable application fee.

Tags will be drawn shortly after July 15 and this year, hunters chosen will be contacted earlier than in the past, giving them more time to prepare for their hunt.

Once selected hunters are notified, they will be required to purchase their tag for $100. SCDNR will begin mailing purchased tags after Aug. 1.

All applicants must be 16-years-old at the time of the hunt to be eligible for a tag.

Tag holders are allowed to have as many assistants as desired. Those assistants must all have a valid SC hunting license (if 16 or older). Non-resident assistants must also pay a $200 Alligator Hunting Fee, as well as a valid SC hunting license.

A Big Game Permit is not required.

The 2023 alligator hunting season will begin at 12 noon on Sept. 9 and end at 12 noon on Oct. 14. Hunters who are hooked up with a secure line attached and fighting a gator at noon on the last day may continue that fight for a reasonable time or until the alligator becomes detached from the securing line. At that point, the hunt is over.
