STAR Tournament lasts from Memorial Day to Labor Day
For many years, the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) in Florida, Louisiana, and Texas have held STAR (Statewide Tournament and Anglers Rodeo) in those states. And this year, CCA South Carolina is giving anglers in the Palmetto State a chance to fish in this unique tournament format.
Unlike most fishing tournaments, where everyone meets for blast off, then again for the weigh in later that day, the CCA STAR tournament is held throughout the summer. This means anglers that can’t fish on a certain day aren’t left out. You can fish all you want from May 27 through Sept. 4, day or night, with live bait, cut bait, or artificials, and all you have to do is register for the tournament through CCA South Carolina’s website.
So enough with the fine print –– what’s the prize? Anglers get two shots at winning a 2017 Sea Hunt BX 22 BR bay boat with a Yamaha 150 outboard and a Wesco aluminum trailer. The boats are valued at over $40,000 each.
Scott Whitaker, CCA South Carolina executive director and some volunteers (none of which are allowed to participate in the STAR) will catch, tag, and release 50 redfish before the start of the tournament. The tags will be blue and will read “CCA SC 2017.”
The first angler to catch, report, and certify a CCA SC-tagged redfish will win the first boat. The second angler to do the same will win the second boat. Professional fishing guides are ineligible to win the boat, but anglers fishing with professional guides are eligible. Guides can also enter the Guide Division, which allows them the chance to win a $500 gas card for registering the greatest number of participants in the STAR.
The entry fee is $30, and you must be a member of CCA to register. Signing up for the STAR is easy, and can be done online. Click here to sign up, which Whitaker said takes about 5 minutes.
