Mandatory harvest reporting begins

Speckled seatrout are among the fish that must be reported when harvested.

NC anglers must report harvest numbers of five species

As of Dec. 1, 2025 anglers in North Carolina are required to report the harvest of any flounder, red drum, striped bass, speckled trout, and weakfish to the NC Division of Marine Fisheries.

Harvest reporting is required in Coastal Fishing Waters, Joint Fishing Waters, and Inland Fishing Waters adjacent to Coastal and Joint Fishing Waters.

This map shows where mandatory harvest requirements are in place.

Marine Fisheries will use the information collected in these reports, along with other data collection efforts, to aid them in managing North Carolina’s fisheries.

Harvests can be reported through an online form or through an app developed specifically for this purpose.

Information to be reported will include

Angler’s fishing license number

Date of harvest

Number of each species kept

Area where fish were harvested

Type of gear used (hook and line or gig)

Harvests must be reported either electronically or on a paper report card at the time harvest is complete. If fishing from a boat, this is when the angler reaches shore. If fishing from shore, this is when you are no longer engaged in fishing.
