Boat crash occurred over Memorial Day weekend

A well-known Raleigh native, Conen Morgan, was killed on May 28, 2023 after the boat he was in crashed south of Shackleford Banks near Cape Lookout National Seashore along North Carolina’s coast.

Morgan and two others were riding in a boat around 4:30 p.m. when a wave ejected all passengers. They all swam to Shackleford Banks, but Morgan collapsed at the wave line, according to the National Parks Service.

The other two passengers tried to move Morgan to dry ground, but were unable to do so. They administered CPR and called 911, prompting the arrival of park rangers and paramedics, who were unsuccessful at reviving Morgan.

Morgan, 42-years-old, was a graduate of Garner High School and NC State University. He was heavily involved in local and state politics, and had a goal of becoming governor of NC one day.
