Colby Shaw sets new NC record

Colby Shaw of Newport, NC caught the new North Carolina state record vermilion snapper on April 18, 2025 while fishing out of Morehead City.

The new record was officially announced on May 1.

Shaw’s fish weighed 7 pounds, 4 ounces, and beat the previous record of 6 pounds, 9 ounces, which stood since 2009.

Fishing from his own boat south of Beaufort Inlet, Shaw was using cut bait on 65-pound braided line spooled onto his Shimano reel, which was mounted on a Shimano rod.

The new record fish was 23.5 inches fork length and had a 17-inch girth. Shaw had the fish weighed by fisheries staff at the Morehead City headquarters office of the NC Division of Marine Fisheries.
