Daniel Martin of Summerville had never been offshore fishing until June 15, and it was a memorable trip.
Martin hooked into the fish of a lifetime, a 93-pound wahoo that bit at 10 a.m. and took him 20 minutes to land aboard Capt. Jeff Floyd’s OTSEA out of the Wapoo Cut Boat Landing.
“The wahoo took the centerline, which was the one we had way back behind the boat,” said Martin. “He ripped one long, hard run that took a bunch of line off the reel, but once he got to the boat, Brent Wood stuck him with the gaff with little problem.”
The fish that ate a blue and black Ilander lure rigged with a ballyhoo was so big he barely fit in the fishbox.
“It was a beautiful ocean with calm and crystal clear blue waters,” said Martin. “Remarkably, when the big wahoo came to the boat, another smaller wahoo was swimming right alongside it.”
On the way back in to port, the crew started placing bets on what the wahoo might weigh. The closer they got to the boat ramp, the more curious they were, so they decided to weigh him in. Their best guess was that the wahoo weighed 75 pounds, so they were surprised and shocked to find out the bluewater beast went 93 pounds on a set of certified scales at Haddrell’s Point West manned by assistant manager Scott Hammond.
“I do a lot of freshwater fishing in the lakes I live near, but this wahoo tops anything I’ve ever done in freshwater,” said Martin. “This wahoo was truly exciting, amazing and a great experience, and I realize it’s a once in a lifetime fish.”
