Future of golden tilefish looks bright

Golden tilefish prefer muddy bottoms along the slopes into canyons where they can ambush passing prey.

There appears to be no danger of golden tilefish being fished out under current management. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council’s recently concluded stock assessment resulted in a doubling of the commercial allocation. Can expanded recreational fishing be far behind?

Either way, other target fish in the same deep-drop canyon waters will keep people coming back. Capt. Steve Wray said many of his rigs were cut off by big golden tilefish, wreckfish that may get to 150 pounds, or big snowy or golden-edge grouper.
