REEL HOOK UP leads the way with 400 release points

Twenty-two boats fished Day One of the Carolina Billfish Classic, the first leg of the 2020 South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series on Thursday, June 18. A total of six billfish were released on the day.

REEL HOOK UP leads the tournament with a total of 400 points. The 50-foot Viking owned by Michael Carter and captained by Randy Ragland released two sailfish Thursday. Their first release came at 10:02 a.m. They released their second one at 2:27 p.m. They’r the only boat to release more than one billfish on Day One.

TRASH MAN, REEL PASSION, CUERVOS, and AT LAST each released one sailfish apiece and are all tied with 200 points.

No boats brought a blue marlin to the scales on Day One, so the Heaviest Blue Marlin category remains wide open. Any blue marlin brought to the scales must be at least 105 inches in length.

Blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish, and spearfish are all eligible species for the Release category. Blue marlin are worth 600 points apiece, white marlin and spearfish are worth 300, and sailfish are worth 200 points.

Other categories include Heaviest Tuna, Heaviest Dolphin, and Heaviest Wahoo. Some dolphin and at least one wahoo was weighed on Day One, but the weights were not available.

Teams will fish again Friday and Saturday to determine the winner of the 2020 Carolina Billfish Classic.
