June 8 kids’ fishing event is one of dozens across N.C. in June

The June 8 kids' fishing event is just one of dozens held throughout N.C. in June.

Neuseway Nature Park’s main pond will be stocked prior to event

Neuseway Nature Park and Neuse Sport Shop will co-host a free fishing event on June 8. The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon for children ages 15 and younger. The event will occur at the park’s main pond, which will be stocked with catfish prior to the event.

The event is to help celebrate National Fishing and Boating Week. It is one of more than 30 statewide fishing events supported by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, in partnership with Neuse Sport Shop and the U.S. Forest Service.

Commission staff will have a limited number of free loaner rods and reels for people to borrow. Basic tackle will also be available, but participants need to bring their own fishing bait.

Organizers will award more than 100 prizes to anglers

Anglers ages 15 and younger can register at the event to enter a statewide drawing for a chance to win one of more than 100 fishing-related prizes. The grand prize is a lifetime sportsman’s license. This includes freshwater and saltwater fishing privileges, as well as hunting privileges, donated by Neuse Sport Shop, located in Kinston. First prize is a lifetime inland fishing license, donated by Triangle Fly Fishers.

Additional prizes, such as fishing rod and reel combos, towels, fish-themed playing cards and mini-tackle boxes, will be provided by the Commission. The drawing will occur at the end of June and a list of winners will be published at ncwildlife.org in July.
