14th Annual Jacksonville Trout Tournament is Oct. 22
Hurricane Matthew did plenty of damage across the Carolinas, and it will take some time to recover from it, but if you think the fishing is suffering, then you can put those fears to rest. Capt. Allen Jernigan of Breadman Ventures has been catching speckled trout in the Sneads Ferry area.
The water looks dirty and nasty, said Jernigan, but he said it isn’t bothering the fish at all. He landed over 40 fish total on a trip yesterday that aside from trout, had a few redfish mixed in. Storm Shrimp and Salty Bay plastic lures did the trick for him, and with the weather cooling a little more each day, Jernigan (910-467-1482) only expects the bite to get hotter.
That’s good news for anglers up and down the coast, and good news for the 14th Annual Jacksonville Speckled Trout Tournament on Oct. 22. What can you win? $1500 is the grand prize, with separate prizes for Jr. Angler and Lady Angler winners.
A mandatory captain’s meeting will be held the night before at Caspers Marina in Swansboro at 6:45 p.m. This will also serve as the site for weighing in, as well as the dinner and awards ceremony. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the USO of Jacksonville.
