Trout action in Wando River heats up

Capt. Jeff Yates has found some nice concentrations of speckled trout in the Wando River.

Speckled trout in the Wando River have gotten cranked up fairly early in the spring season, but just in time for Capt. Jeff Yates of TyJo Knot Charters in Charleston.

“We caught 32 trout on Saturday free-lining DOA shrimp in the Wando on Saturday,” said Yates (843-270-8956). “Most of them were small; we probably had eight keepers, and the biggest was about 18 inches.”

But for March 20, no one was complaining, least of all Yates.

“I found ‘em first, and we caught 23 in the first two hours,” Yates said. “My brother, David, went to another spot and they weren’t there. They I left to go find some reds, and he pulled in there and caught 27 more over the next two hours.

“We didn’t find the reds, but we had about 15 or 20 minutes left, and I pulled up on one little corner, one edge, and we caught nine more trout, which gave us 32 for the day.”

As usual, Yates was fishing the DOA Shrimp right out of the package, pre-rigged. His go-to colors were gold and silver (Nos. 313 and 314).
