Spots bite best in the worst weather

Cold fronts bring spots migrating southward in the fall. They are accompanied by windy, rainy weather. The best conditions for catching spots are often the worst conditions for angler comfort.

Veteran spot fishermen like Alice Locklear of Shannon wear foul-weather gear and keep right on fishing. A jacket, raincoat or sweatshirt with a hood is the preferred outer garment for anglers who wear ball caps. Cinching down the hood can save the cap from blowing away to be swallowed up by the rolling ocean below.
