Cathy Jones catches 11-pound, 3-ounce speckled trout

Cathy Jones of Belhaven, NC didn’t break the NC state record trout with her 11-pound, 3-ounce speck, but she may set a new IGFA women’s world record with the 33.5-inch fish.

North Carolina does not have a women’s division in their fishing record book, but the International Game Fish Association does. If all the paperwork goes through, Jones will unseat the current female world record holder, Jackie Patton, who caught a 10-pound, 9-ounce speck from Florida’s Banana River in 1979.

Jones caught her gator trout from her family’s dock on Pungo Creek off the Pamlico Sound on Nov. 20. She battled the fish on her Ugly Stik rod and Daiwa spinning reel for about 15 minutes. Her net fell off the dock during the fight, so she grabbed the trout by its gill plate.

Eastside Bait and Tackle in Washington, NC weighed the fish for Jones.
