Spanish thick just off the beach near Little River Inlet

The nearshore waters off Little River have been teeming with Spanish mackerel over the past week.

Presence of menhaden is attracting mackerel

The mackerel bite off Little River Inlet has been great – and it’s about to get better.

Capt. David Cutler of Lowcountry Fishing Charters said the waters just off the beaches of the Grand Strand have been giving up some excellent Spanish mackerel of late, and he can hardly wait for the king mackerel to start piling in.

“The Spanish bite has been pretty steady, and it’s been in close – within two miles of the beach,” said Cutler (843-222-7433). “There are a bunch of 2-pound Spanish around. We’ve been trolling No. 1 or 00 Clark Spoons at about 6 mph, either on top or behind a trolling weight.

“You can catch bigger fish around some of the inshore wrecks or reefs,” he said. “We had a 5-1/2-pound Spanish off the General Sherman (wreck) the other day.”

What’s got the fishing cranked up is a large number of baitfish, menhaden to be exact, that have taken up residence just outside Little River Inlet.

“The pogies have come back – there’s a good amount of menhaden up and down the beach,” Cutler said. “The Spanish have found ‘em, and it shouldn’t be long before the kings show up.”
