Summerville youth’s fish almost doubles previous record
Caleb Adams, an 11-year-old from Summerville, almost doubled the Folly Beach Fishing Pier record with an 8-pound, .96-ounce spadefish that he caught on Memorial Day. The previous record, which dates to 1997, was 4 pounds, 8 ounces.
Casting just a circle hook and cut shrimp, Adams broke off the first fish he hooked. But he caught the big spade on his second try, according to Tal McCaskill, a pier employee.
McCaskill reported that the fishing is starting to pick up and good catches are coming in around the pilings.
“They are catching tons of whiting from the surf to the diamond on a Carolina rig with shrimp,” he said.
“The (redfish) are showing up, and they are catching them within the slot limit (15 to 23 inches),” McCaskill said. “The kings and Spanish mackerel have not shown up yet, but there is plenty of bait around the pier.”
Two pier tournaments planned for June. The first will be on June 14, and the second will be the sixth-annual Folly Beach Anglers’ Take a Kid Fishing Day Tournament on June 21. The kids’ tournament has grown from 53 kids in 2009 to 197 in 2013, with 75 parents and 35 volunteers participating.
This event is free, and all kids 16 and under are welcome. Fishing rods, reels and bait will be provided, and trophies and prizes will be awarded for all age groups; plus, lots of raffle prizes will be given away after the tournament.
