Some tarpon spend their summers off the SC coast
Luke Ballam of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. was testing out his new East Cape Vantage boat in the Awendaw area this weekend when he caught a nice tarpon. Not wanting to cause any additional stress to the fish, Ballam got in the water with it for a photo, then released it on its way.
These fish are summer visitors to the Carolinas, and a challenge to catch. Many anglers try year after year with no success. Between early and late fall, the “silver kings” head south where they spend the winter and spring. Ballam spends his winters guiding clients on waterfowl hunts in Kansas and Canada with Elm Creek Outfitters. So a summertime tarpon was a great catch for the avid outdoorsman.
