Good St. Helena Sound/Coosaw River spots

Poling is a common way to move a boat across a shallow flat for redfish.

Redfish spots abound around Beaufort, and most are indicated on the Top Spot map #N233. Knowing good spots gives you one-third of the equation for success. Adding the right time of the tide and good technique completes the fish-catching puzzle. Below are a few spots with some tips for success.

In the St. Helena Sound area, two landings are convenient to a couple of good fishing spots. The Jenkins Creek Landing, located down Edding Point Road off US 21 on St. Helena Island and the Sam’s Point Landing on Lady’s Island, down Sam’s Point Road, both allow access to the Airport flats near Warsaw Island. Fish this area on a low and rising tide for spot-tails in the very shallow water. In April, the redfish are still schooled on low-tide flats relating to oyster outcroppings and shoreline coves.

Also near Sam’s Point Landing and outside the mouth of Lucy Creek is the area across the Coosaw River, at the mouth of the Combahee River, that has points and flats holding both redfish and trout in April. Fish the upriver point at the Combahee and the flats on both sides of the inter-coastal channel called the Ashepoo-Coosaw Cutoff.

Also just outside the mouth of Lucy Creek, along the banks of Coosaw Island and Lady’s Island, both upriver and downriver, are docks and shoreline that hold both trout and redfish. Focus on the shallow water times for the reds and the higher water for the trout.
