Go slow in hot weather

Most fishermen equate hot weather with more-active fish, but that’s not necessarily so. According to guides Fred Bricketto and Tom Siwarski, you need to fish very slowly during the summer.

First, because redfish are cold-blooded animals, their systems slow down as weather approaches extremes – cold or hot.

“You need to fish your artificials, your soft plastics, very slowly,” Siwarski said. “You need to barely crawl them across the bottom, so they don’t have to move too far to find them.”

Bricketto also said he fishes slowly, and he adds a second reason.

“I try and fish artificial baits as slowly as possible,” he said. “During the summer, the water is dirtier than it is during the winter, so you’re not sight-fishing, and the reds are going to bite more on scent than sight.”
