Best tackle for artificials

Light tackle can handle almost all inshore reds you’ll run into.

Anglers who normally fish with artificial lures can select a very good and reasonably priced outfit that includes a medium weight, 6 1/2-foot spinning rod similar to Bass Pro Shops’ IM6 or IM7 Graphite Series and an open-faced spinning reel like the Shimano Saros 2500F.

Some prefer spooling 12-pound monofilament, but many experts now opt for 20-pound Power Pro braid — which boasts the same diameter as 6-pound mono — for added casting distance.

Anglers commonly thread a Gulp! or Bass Assassin Sea Shad trailer behind a quarter-ounce chartreuse or red jighead when casting to redfish.

Fly-fishing anglers frequently choose an 8-weight fly rod and reel with a floating line and about 9 feet of leader ending in a 20-pound fluorocarbon tippet. Popular flies include various deceivers or Clouser minnows that mimic small baitfish or shrimp.
