Home-cooking is fine with Young

Madison’s Glynn Sharon took big-fish honors at the April 25 Carolina Crappie Team Tournament on High Rock Lake with this 1.84-pound slab.

Doug Young, a veteran fisherman from Salisbury, won the May 16 Bassmaster Weekend Series event at High Rock Lake.Young had a 5-fish limit that weighed 19.01 pounds and included a 7.18-pound bass, the big fish of the day. His winnings totalled $5,295.

Ricky Roten of Millers Creek was second with 17.26 pounds and had the second-biggest fish of the day. a 6.96-pound bass. He took home $1,324.

Also placing were: Lexington’s Chris Brown, third with 16.38 for $883; Mike Miller of Trinity, fourth with 15.84 for $618; Wake Forest’s Mark Lamb, fifth, with 15.40 for $530; Wayne Hauser of Mooresville, sixth, 15.22, $486.

Other North Carolina anglers in the money were: Eric Rothrock of High Point, seventh with 15.16 for $441; Rusty Bowers of Albemarle, eighth with 14.81 for $397; Jamie Denison of Winston-Salem, ninth with 14.64 for $353; and Robert Morrison Jr. of Winston-Salem, 11th with 14.10 for $256.

Junior Allen of Biscoe topped the co-anglers with 10.05 pounds and won $1,279. Ralph Hollifield Sr. of Winston-Salem took second and $783 with 9.61 pounds, a catch that included a 5.73-pound bass, the co-angler big fish.

Completing the top five: John Russell of Charlotte, third with 8.84 for $426; Daniel Hallman of Salisbury, fourth with 8.80 for $298; and Jack Scott of Salisbury, fifth with 8.59 for $256.

Kerr Lake BFL finishes in tie

James Blankenship of Lexington tied Maurice Freeze of Concord for top honors at the May 9 Walmart BFL North Carolina Division tournament at Kerr Lake.

The two fishermen each checked in five bass weighing 14 pounds, 2 ounces. Their checks were identical: $2,972.

William Blanton of Fayetteville placed second with 13-8 for $1,322; and Bobby Zerbe of Charlotte was third with 12-4 for $925. Blanton also tied for big fish and won $267.50 with his 4-5 bass.

Lexington’s Art Ferguson was first among co-anglers with 14-10 , winning $1,981 plus $267 for the 5-13 co-angler big fish. Other co-anglers were: John Wilson of Hazelwood, second with 11-6 for $991; Michael Miller of High Point, third with 10-2 for $662; Brian Smith of Winston-Salem, fourth with 9-14 for $462; and North Wilkesboro’s Mike Shatley, fifth with 9-6 for $396.

Coble wins at Hartwell

Jeff Coble of Manson won the April 18 Walmart BFL Savannah River Division event on South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell with a 19-08 limit worth $4,315.

Coble used swimbaits and green-pumpkin plastic worms to catch his fish.

Among co-anglers, Darren Jeter of Marshall was second with 16-8, winning $1,079; and John Hyatt of Leicester ranked fifth with 13-12, winning $431.

Briefly…

• Four pro fishermen from North Carolina finished in the money at the April 24-26 Bassmaster Elite Series Blue Ridge Brawl at Virginia’s Smith Mountain Lake.

They were: Dustin Wilks of Rocky Mount, 27th with 36-14; Pat Golden of High Point, 29th with 36-9; Dave Wolak of Wake Forest, 30th with 36-8; and Marty Stone of Fayetteville, 50th with 25-8. They each received $9,506.

Stone placed fifth with 99-5 and won $14,000 at the May 7-10 Marine Formula STA-BIL Southern Challenge on Alabama’s Lake Guntersville.

Monica Altman of Angier was ninth among co-anglers with 7-6 and collected $585 at the April 23-25 Women’s Bassmaster event on Louisiana’s Ouachita River.

• James Seabolt of Dunn and Brian Harrison of Camp Lejeune won the April 17 Warriors on the Water tournament on Jordan Lake, an event held in appreciation of our military men and women.

Seabolt and Harrison weighed in 17.82 pounds, a catch anchored with an 8-pound, 9-ounce bass. First place was worth $2,000.

• Co-anglers Shane LeHew of Charlotte and Grant McPeters of Marion earned checks at the April 23-26 FLW Tour National Guard tournament on Lake Norman.

LeHew finished sixth with 4-6, winning $3,500; McPeters was 10th with 2-8, winning $1,750.

• Co-angler Donald Miller of High Point placed second with 24-15 and won $3,504 at the April 30-May 2 Stren Series Southeast Division tournament at Santee-Cooper, S.C.

• Boaters Christopher Foley of Youngsville and David Cooke of Mooresville placed in the money at the April 30-May 2 Bassmaster Southern Open at Lake Wheeler, Decatur, Ala.

Foley finished 12th with 35-12, winning $3,440; and Cooke finished 15th with 34-15, winning $2,211.

Among co-anglers, Greensboro’s Larry Inman finished eighth with 25-07 and received $1,857; and George Beville of Apex placed 28th with 18-09 and banked $342.

• Scott Mooneyham of Fayetteville placed second with 16-1 and won $2,469 at the May 2 Walmart BFL Piedmont Division tournament at Lake Gaston.

Lexington’s Chris Baldwin claimed the third-place check for $1,646 with 14-14. Thomas Wilkerson Jr. of Oxford ranked fifth with 13-15, winning $988.

Kinston’s Brandon Sykes took big-fish honors with 6 pound, 10-ounce bass worth $745.

Brandon McLeod of Spring Lake topped the co-anglers with 10-06 and won $2,419.

Other co-angler scores were: Hunter Campbell of Henderson, second with 10-3 for $1,210; Richard Ohlson of Garner, third with 9-10 for $807; and Eddie Cook of Clemmons, fourth with 9-2 for $565.

• The N.C. State University bass fishing-team won the April 25 College Bass Fishing Tournament on Chapel Hill’s University Lake with 22-10.

Drew Gregory and Jarid Beard led the Wolfack with 8-11. Other team members were: Casey Johnson, Mark Kozazcki, Alex Freeman, and Will White.

North Carolina finished second, with 8-5; and Wake Forest was third with 2-2.
