Youth fishing rodeo, paddling clinic scheduled for Cheraw area

A youth paddling clinic will be held Sept. 13 at Cheraw State Park, the same day a youth fishing clinic is scheduled for the Cheraw Fish Hatchery.

Fish hatchery, state park will be sites for Sept. 13 events.

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources and S.C. Parks of Recreation and Tourism will partner to hold a youth fishing rodeo and paddling clinic at Cheraw State Park on Sept. 13.

Youths ages 6 to 15 are advised to pre-register, as space is limited for the family event, which will be held from 7:30 to 11 a.m.

Youth will have an opportunity to fish the Cheraw Fish Hatchery during sessions that will begin at 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. Youth, who are required to sign in 30 minutes before the start of a session, must be accompanied by an adult, but no adult fishing is allowed. Anglers should bring their own fishing equipment and tackle. No minnows are allowed. Anglers can catch and keep fish, but event-specific creel limits will be in place. The Cheraw Fish Hatchery is five miles southwest of Cheraw adjacent to US 1.

The paddling clinics will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and noon-1 p.m. at Cheraw State Park, with park staff doing the instruction. Canoes, kayaks, life jackets and paddles will be provided. Sessions are limited to the first 10 participants who sign up by calling 843-537-9656.
