Wright, Elton win Newman tourney

Steve Bullaboy of China Grove and his partner, Jerry Bullaboy, finished second in the Dec. 5 Lake Norman Winter Series.

Jody Wright of Ellenboro and Lester Elton of Forest City topped a field of 128 teams to win the Ryan Newman Foundation Charity Bass Tournament at Lake Norman on Dec. 11.

Their 5-fish limit of 16 pounds 13 ounces included the big fish of the day, a 5-pound, 8-ounce bass.

Wright and Elton won a fully-rigged Nitro Z9 bass boat and merchandise worth more than $50,000.

Chris Haywood and Matt Haywood of Lincolnton placed second with 13-13. Marty Sweeting of Harrisburg took third with 13-11.

The tournament is an annual charity event that’s taken place the past six years since the establishment of the Ryan Newman Foundation by Newman, a NASCAR Sprint Cup driver, and his wife, Krissie. Drivers, pro anglers and local fishermen gather to raise funds for the non-profit organization.

Celebrities at the 2010 event included Martin Truex, Kyle Petty, and Mike Skinner. Professional anglers at the event were Tim Horton, Davy Hite, Casey Ashley and Jason Quinn.

Truex, a NASCAR driver, won the big-bass trophy among celebrities with a 4-pound, 11-ounce lunker.
