RALEIGH, N.C. (March 2) – The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has opened the newly refurbished Weldon Boating Access Area on the Roanoke River for this year’s striped bass season.
The boat ramp has two lanes, with a third to be added after the water level recedes. A temporary dock, which will be removed after striper season ends, also is scheduled for installation on the site. The site’s lot has been paved and landscaped, and the river bank has been stabilized to decrease erosion.
“The Weldon site is one of our most-popular access areas, with thousands of anglers using it for access to the Roanoke during striper season,” said Erik Christofferson, chief of the Commission’s Division of Engineering Services. “It’s been completely refurbished, with improvements to make access easier and more convenient for our citizens as they head to the Roanoke River over the next two months and the rest of the year.”
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission opens the entire Roanoke River Management Area to striped bass harvest from March 1 through April 30. The Roanoke River Management Area includes the Roanoke River and tributaries from Roanoke Rapids Lake Dam downstream to Albemarle Sound, including the Cashie, Middle and Eastmost rivers.
The Weldon access area is located on Rockfish Drive off U.S. Highway 158 in Halifax County.
