Thrift bags win at Beaver Lake

Randy Weddington and Ronnie Smith won the March 5 Yadkin Team Tournament on High Rock Lake with a 5-fish limit that bettered 25 pounds.

Bryan Thrift of Shelby won the FLW Tour event on Arkansas’ Beaver Lake in early March with a 4-day catch of 54 pounds, eight ounces, to take the first-place prize of $100,000 plus a Ranger Cup bonus of $25,000.

Thrift, the reigning FLW Tour Angler of the Year, caught most of his fish on a jerkbait around timber.

Matt Arey, also from Shelby, finished fifth with 48-4 and won $25,000.

Mike McDonald of Randleman finished 29th among co-anglers with 6-10 and collected $1,200.

Two N.C. anglers get BASS money

Two North Carolina anglers had paydays in Bassmaster Elite Series event on Florida’s Harris Chain of Lakes in mid-March.

High Point’s Pat Golden finished sixth with 55 pounds, five ounces, winning $13,500; Rocky Mount’s Dustin Wilks was 42nd with 28-11 for $10,000.

Shaw Grigsby of Gainesville, Fla., won the event with 75-4, taking home $101,000. Grigsby and Golden caught their bass sight-fishing in the same area.

Wilks, Golden and Dave Wolak of Wake Forest took home checks in the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament on Florida’s St. John’s River the following week.

Wilks had the best finish among the trio, placing eighth with 58-12 and winning $12,500. Golden was 15th with 43 pounds, and Wolak was 41st with 32-7; Golden and Wolak won $10,000 each.

Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla., took the first-place prize of $101,000 with 77-1.

Wilkinson scores at Kerr

Oxford’s Tom Wilkinson won the Bassmaster Weekend Series Virginia Division 19 event at Kerr Lake on March 19 with 14.89 pounds, a catch anchored with a 4.91-pound bass, the tournament’s big fish.

Wilkinson, who caught his fish on spinnerbaits and jerkbaits, won $2,157 for first place and $225 for big-fish honors.

Hal Caldwell of Wilson placed second with 14.20 pounds, winning $1,078.

Other top anglers were: Dan Jackson of Madison, third with 13.05 pounds for $719; Rodney Sorrell of Stokesdale, fourth with 12.47 pounds for $503; Wesley Cashwell of Roanoke Rapids, fifth with 11.87 pounds for $431; Marty Warren of Elon, seventh with 11.06 pounds for $359; and Tony Woodard of Four Oaks, ninth with 10.78 pounds for $288.

Among co-anglers, Jim Opetaia-Williamson of Henderson finished third with 8.26 pounds, winning $360; Robert Perkins of Rougemont ranked fifth with 6.78 pounds, winning $216; and James Way Jr. of McLeansville tied Brian S. Young of Kill Devil Hills for seventh place with 6.32 pounds, each winning $171.
