Stinkbaits are a good option

Commercially made stinkbaits work because catfish have a highly developed sense of smell they regularly use to locate food.

Catfish will feast on just about anything from small fish, snails and worms to crawfish and even some seeds from neighboring trees. And even though they have decent eyesight, the conditions they live in offer little chance to see their prey at great distances.

Catfish use their other senses, including their extraordinary sense of smell and electroreception to find something to eat. And it is their amazing sense of taste that makes commercially-made stinkbaits very effective for luring in catfish.

Catfish have more than 250,000 taste buds and can sense a drop of blood in the water from very great distances. They have highly developed sensory receptors in their nostrils that they use to discern and locate food at long distances, so fishermen who target them can use smelly baits to leave a crumb trail right to the baited hook.

Commercially-produced catfish stinkbaits are generally made from a wide range of materials, but they are enhanced with blood, fish parts and cheese that can all be effective for catching catfish.

One of the most-important aspects of any stinkbait is the ability to stay on the hook for extended periods of time. Berkley makes a product called Powerdip Catfish Bait that is very stinky and is engineered to stay on a hook or in a scent tube in hot conditions and heavy current.

One of the best features of stinkbait is that it is very portable and relatively inexpensive. But, the most important part about stinkbait is that it works.
