Safety first

Fishermen targeting bottomfish around nearshore wrecks and reefs will often come in contact with bigger targets like this cobia.

When fishing off the beach using a jet ski as a platform, remember these safety rules:

• Always wear a personal floatation device;

• It is illegal to operate personal watercraft at night;

• When venturing off the beach to nearshore reefs, it is possible to lose sight of land. GPS units are a must in order to find your way back.

• Try using equipment with multiple functions. Many marine radios and fish finders have GPS units built in, and a cell phone still has GPS capability even with a loss of cellular signal.
