PWC rider allegedly assaulted couple on pontoon boat
Twenty-nine-year-old Nathan Drew Morgan of Walhalla, S.C. was shot and killed aboard a pontoon boat on Lake Keowee after being rescued from the water. A man and wife on the pontoon boat picked up Morgan and a female companion that had apparently been tossed from their Sea Doo personal watercraft, which was running circles around them. The incident occurred on March 15, 2022.
Neither Morgan nor his friend were wearing life jackets. After getting on the pontoon boat, Morgan allegedly assaulted the couple, according to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office. During the altercation, Morgan was pushed back into the water in hopes of defusing the situation.
When he got onboard the pontoon boat a second time, Morgan allegedly started another altercation. At this point, the man driving the pontoon boat told authorities he feared for his life and the life of his wife. He shot Morgan in the chest, killing him.
South Carolina’s 10th Circuit Solicitor’s Office is working through the details of the situation to determine whether this is a case of self-defense or if charges should be filed against the shooter. Because it’s an ongoing investigation, the names of the others involved have not been released.
SCDNR, the Criminal Investigations Division and the Special Operations Division responded to the scene. It’s unclear what led to the initial altercation between Morgan and the couple on the boat.
