Piers pay off for Walters at High Rock

Todd Walters of Greensboro won the FLW Bass Fishing League tournament on High Rock Lake in mid-June with a 22-8 catch that featured these two nice bass.

Greensboro’s Todd Walters targeted flat piers to beat his fishing peers at the June 19 FLW Bass Fishing League North Carolina Division tournament on sun-baked High Rock Lake. While the majority of the 91-man field beat the piers, Walters became selective, fishing jigs around flat piers that provided bass with more shade in the intense heat.

His haul of 22 pounds, eight ounces was worth $3,353.

Salisbury’s Spence Brunson shocked onlookers when he hoisted an 8-pound 3-ounce bass taken on a Zoom-3 crankbait. The lunker won big-fish honors, worth $455, and anchored a stringer of 21-12 to give Brunson second place and $1,777.

Lexington’s Chris Baldwin had 20-10 to finish third, winning $1,185.

Completing the top 10 were: John Ritchie of Salisbury, fourth with 19-12 for $829; Robert Walser of Lexington, fifth with 19-8 for $711; Bob Jennett of Kernersville, sixth with 19-7 for $651; Maurice Freeze of Concord, seventh with 19 pounds for $592; Kyle Whisnant of Charlotte, eighth with 18-9 for $533; Gary Cline of Lexington, ninth with 17-10 for $474; and Roger Pope of Statesville, 10th with 17-6 for $415.
