NCWRC hosting fly fishing, other skills workshops throughout March

Courses held at Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education in Transylvania County

The NCWRC is hosting 14 outdoors-related programs at the Pisagah Center for Wildlife Education in Transylvania County throughout March. The events are free, open on a first-come, first-serve basis, and require pre-registration.

The events are as follows:

March 8 – Introduction to Fly Fishing. This class is open to attendees 12 and older, and will teach the basics of fly fishing, including equipment selection, knots, and casting techniques. The last two hours will be spent fishing the Davidson River. The class runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and all materials are provided.

March 9 – On the Water: Little River. Open to participants 12 and older, this class involves practicing fly fishing skills with instructors on the Little River’s Delayed Harvest section. Attendees will learn how to read the water for wading, proper selection of flies, presentation, casting, knots, and stream entomology. The class runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and all materials are provided.

March 11 and 28 – Nature Nuts: Wood Ducks. Open to ages 4-7, this class will teach about the plight of America’s wood ducks, who were once a rare sight here. Students will find out what caused their rapid decline, and how they made their comeback. Class runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

March 11 and 28 – Eco Explorers: Fish Tales. For ages 8-13. This class is about fish anatomy, including their diet, the need for scales, and how they breathe. This is a hands-on class focusing on trout, and dissection is the main teaching process. Class runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

March 15 and 16 – Hunter Education Certification. All ages. Covering hunter responsibility and firearms, this course meets North Carolina’s hunter education requirements, and ends with certification accepted by all state wildlife agencies across the United States. This is a two-day course, which runs from 6 p.m to 9 p.m.

March 21 – Introduction to Fly Fishing. This class is open to attendees 12 and older, and will teach the basics of fly fishing, including equipment selection, knots, and casting techniques. The last two hours will be spent fishing the Davidson River. The class runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and all materials are provided.

March 21 – Backyard Birding by Ear. For attendees 10 and older. This class will teach how to recognize common birds by their songs and calls, and begins in the classroom, then moves outside to test your newly acquired skill. Light hiking is involved, and the class runs from 9 a.m. to noon.

March 24 – Fly-Fishing Skills: Casting for Beginners. For participants 12 and older. Students will learn the basics of fly casting, at their own pace, at Lake Imaging in the DuPont State Recreational Forest. All equipment will be provided, and class runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

March 29 – Kids’ Introduction to Fly Fishing. For youth 8-15. Learn the basics of fly fishing, including equipment selection, knots, and casting techniques. The last two hours will be spent fishing the Davidson River. The class runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and all materials are provided.

Mach 31 – Archery. For attendees 8 and older. This hands-on class will involve lots of shooting after learning the basics of archery and the different types of bows and arrows.
