Second Lake Wateree drowning in less than a month

A Great Falls 25-year-old man, Marquavious Sanders, died at Lake Wateree on Saturday, July 1, 2023. Sanders was fishing with family members when he reportedly went into the lake during an attempt to retrieve some fishing gear. He went under water and was not seen again for several minutes. Someone called 911 and others attempted life-saving measures, including CPR while awaiting for EMS. He was then transported to the Emergency Dept. at MUSC Fairfield, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Fairfield County (SC) Coroner’s Office.

Sanders’ drowning was the second on Lake Wateree in less than 3 weeks. On June 18, a 37-year-0ld man was swimming with his family at Wateree when he drowned.
