High Rock angler catches 4+ pound crappie

Slab bit a hand-tied jig

Kevin Blevins of Stokesdale, NC caught a 4.07-pound crappie at High Rock Lake on Dec. 27, 2024. The fish was 19.25 inches long and 7 inches wide.

“What a dream come true, being in the 4-pounder club,” said Blevins.

Aside from catching the gargantuan fish, it wasn’t a particularly pleasant day.

“It was a cold, drizzling day. I caught the big fish around 2 p.m., and I was fishing in about 7 foot of water,” he said.

The fish bit one of Blevins’ own hand-tied jigs while using a Todd Huckabee 8-foot Epic rod. His fishing line was 10-pound test line from K9 Fishing.

After getting good measurements, weight and photos of the big crappie, Blevins released it back into High Rock Lake.

North Carolina’s state record for crappie currently stands at 4 pounds, 15 ounces, and was caught on a minnow by Dean Dixon in April of 1980 at Asheboro City Lake No. 4.
