Crappie fishermen no longer have to construct a downsized version of the Alabama rig.
In attempting to copy the Alabama rig, anglers twisted, cut and devised multi-baited wire rigs of their own with varying degrees of success. Some wire contraptions wouldn’t run true; others couldn’t be fished without tangling, and many took more time to make than they were worth.
Now and then, they caught fish.
The TTI-Blakemore Group has recently marketed a downsized version of the Alabama rig that can be cast or trolled and is specifically designed for crappie fishermen.
Called the Reality Shad Buffet Rig, it features a tandem wire spread holding a 1/16-ounce Road Runner willow-bladed crappie jig on top and a 1/8-ounce Road Runner willow-bladed crappie jig on the bottom that runs without tangling the baits or rolling over.
T. J. Stallings of TTI said the rig’s design reduces the likelihood of injury to fish because it limits the number of hooks spreading out from the rig.
The multi-lure spread is a streamlined presentation with a length of less than 33/4 inches and a weight of 1/4 ounce that should be used with 10-pound line or less. The bait comes in eight shad imitation colors.
