NC angler catches 4+ pound crappie

4+ pound crappieBryan Perry of Roxboro, NC caught a crappie that officially weighed 4.01 pounds on April 10, 2023. The fish will be displayed alive and well in the big tank at the Bass Pro Shops in Cary.

Perry originally started the day hunting turkeys, but that didn’t work out. So he hooked up the boat and headed to the lake. He hasn’t announced which lake yet, but we don’t blame him for keeping that under wraps. The fish was 18 inches long and had a 15-inch girth.

Perry had this to say about catching the slab:

“A day I will never forget. I started out at 5 a.m., got up to chase ole thunder, but he did not say a word. I hooked the boat up and headed to a lake to make up for Saturday. Ran down the lake a couple of miles and as soon as I set the boat down, two turkeys were hammering. I just shook my head, got the Catch The Fever 10-foot beatdown rod out with 8-pound Slime Line with a 25-year-old Bab-fly jig that came out of Jonathan Rimmer’s boat several years ago. Well, it just so happens that Jonathan and his dad were on the same lake. Started catching some really nice fish quick, and what happened next was an understatement.

I made a pitch on a nice fish. Well, I got the surprise of my fishing career when I set the hook. She just rolled up, I hollered ‘net,’ and I forgot I’m by myself. I got her in and just sat there. I called the Rimmer boys and said ‘I’ve got a 3.95.’ So they come to take a picture. So I thought about a mount, then thought about Bass Pro. So they said bring her. The official weight is 4.01. They will hold her for 30 days, then put her in the big tank. I am super pumped and I want to thank Catch The Fever, Slime Line Fishing, Precision Crappie Rods, EZ Drift Trolling Systems, Custom Magic Jigs, Bobcats Bait and Tackle, and Stinger Supply.”
