Cole Poplin sets new bowfish record

Cole Poplin’s 5.7-pound brown bullhead catfish is the new pending SC and world record for bowfishing.

It’s the new SC state and world record brown bullhead catfish

While bowfishing on the night of May 7, 2024, Cole Poplin of Renegade Bowfishing LLC from Moncks Corner, SC, arrowed the pending South Carolina state and world record brown bullhead catfish.

Brown bullhead catfish are among the smallest catfish in South Carolina. The state record for the species caught on rod and reel is a little more than 7 pounds, but Poplin’s 5.7-pound bullhead is the biggest taken by a bow.

“I was just out doing dumb stuff with my friends on a Tuesday night, and it turned into a world record,” joked Poplin. “ You never know what you’ll run across with the bowfishing lights.”

Poplin guides on the Santee Cooper lakes for bowfishing trips and for alligator hunting trips. He and his teammates have won the SC Bowfishing State Championship 4 years in a row. He’s also guided clients to numerous trophy alligators.
