Youth angler catches Lake Wateree big catfish, stripers on his first boat trip

Carter Price had a big day while fishing with Capt. Jason Wolfe of Wolfe’s Guide Service on Aug. 29. Fishing on Lake Wateree, the young angler caught dozens of catfish and stripers. It was a big day for the 8-year-old first ever trip on a boat.

Wolfe said the catfish are biting along the bottom on cut bait while drifting with modified Carolina rigs with Drifting Stix weights. And he said no matter what you’re targeting right now on Wateree, you need to have a rod standing by with a topwater lure tied on for stripers.

The stripers are schooling, and when a school pops up within casting range, they’re quick to bite a lure cast their way. Heddon Super Spook Jr.’s are always good choices. Wolfe (803-487-3690) said this type of bite is always a blast to experience, and you don’t want to be on the lake right now without a chance to take advantage of it.

As good as the catfish and stripers are biting right now, Wolfe said Lake Wateree’s fishing will only get better as we turn the calendar to September. He loves fishing in the fall, and said that’s when many anglers have their best days on Lake Wateree.
