Bulls Bay specks providing plenty of spring action

The Bulls Bay/Cape Romain area has been a hot spot for speckled trout for the past several weeks, with fishermen like Rob Beglin of Pawley’s Island averaging better than 20 fish per day.

Beglin, an IFA and FLW Redfish Tour pro, is a trout fanatic when he’s not chasing redfish for money. He said specks started biting early in the month and haven’t really slowed down, except for a few days after a hard northeast blow – those conditions will stain the waters of sprawling Bulls Bay, and there’s nothing about stained water that specks like.

“Last fall was about as good as we’ve ever had trout fishing down here,” said Beglin. “We should have at least as many fish this year, and bigger ones.”

Beglin knocked out specks weighing 3-1/2 and 4-1/2 pounds on a trip last Wednesday; both fish hit a soft-plastic shad body fished on an 1/8th-ounce jighead. The fish were in three to four feet of water, off oyster rakes in the marsh.

“Most of the fish we’ve been catching have been nice 17- and 18-inch fish, but you’ll get a big fish most every day,” Beglin said.

The last two hours before high tide and the first two hours of the falling tide have been, by far, the best part of the tide cycle. Fishing on the high end of the cycle is almost a requirement at Bulls Bay, which is extremely shallow – with plenty of places for an unwary boater to get stuck on a sandbar in low water.
