17.1-pound stringer wins it
The 2023 Muddy Masters bowfin/mudfish tournament was held on Aug. 5, with a 3-fish limit weighing 17.1 pounds taking top honors.
Amanda and Matthew Morris had the winning stringer, and collected $1300 cash and the grand prize trophy for their efforts.
Dalton and Jeremy Hewit finished second with 16.3 pounds, followed by the third place team of Allison and Richard Josh Porter with 13.88 pounds.
Justin and Min Thomas took fourth place with 11.28 pounds, and Brett Faulk rounded out the top five with his 11.04-pound stringer.
This was the fifth year of the annual event, which was started by Lucus Faulk as a tribute to his late Uncle Levie Gaskins, who held similar events in the 1980s.
“I started this back in 2019 because as a young boy growing up, my Uncle Levie used to host mudfish/bowfin tournaments that he had since the 1980s,” said Faulk. “I became fascinated with not only catching the fish themselves, but also my uncle’s ability to bring all sorts of folks out. He became too ill in his later years to host before his passing, and the tournaments became a thing of the past.
“I felt it right to carry on his legacy and bring it to the mainstream fishing community that bowfin/mudfish are absolute gold. They are anything but ‘trash fish,’” he said.
