Lure making, pier fishing among courses offered
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center is offering four free fishing workshops for people of all ages and skill levels throughout the month of October. Online registration is required for the workshops, which are open on a first-come-first-served basis.
Oct. 18 – Soft Plastics Lure Making Class from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. In this all-ages class, you’ll learn to make your own plastic fishing lures and enjoy the satisfaction of catching fish with your own creations. The workshop teaches the basic techniques for molding a variety of salt and freshwater lures. All materials are provided.
Oct. 20 – Introduction to Pier Fishing from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Open to ages 15 and up. Sign up for this two-part introductory class for 1.5 hours of classroom instruction followed by a field trip to a coastal pier on Oct. 28. Topics include bait, tackle and techniques that will help you catch a variety of fish from a pier.
Oct. 21 – Bear Goes Fishing Adventure from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. This program is designed to meet the requirements for scouts in the Bear Elective Adventure. Scouts will learn about three types of fish, local regulations and different types of fishing equipment. The program includes a chance for the scouts to put their new knowledge to practice as they fish in the Pechmann Center’s stocked ponds. All materials are provided and registration is limited to 50 scouts with a maximum of 10 from individual dens. Contact Tom Carpenter at 910-868-5003 (ext. 11) to preregister.
Oct. 26 – Fly-tying Forum from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Open to ages 10 and up, but participants under 16 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The forum provides attendees the opportunity to increase their fly-tying skills. Participants are encouraged to use their own equipment, but limited equipment and materials are available upon request. Fly-tying forums occur on the fourth Thursday of each month.
The John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center is located at 7489 Raeford Road in Fayetteville, across from Lake Rim. Commission staff at the Pechmann Center conducts fishing workshops, events and clinics throughout the year. Most programs are free and open to the public.
