Tracy Adams of Wilkesboro leads the BASS Southern Open on Lake Norman after Thursday's first round.

Big fish helps him take 5-pound lead into second day

Veteran pro Tracy Adams of Wilkesboro showed the field in the BASS Southern Open how it was done on Thursday’s first of three competition days, sacking a limit that weighed more than 20 pounds and giving himself a lead of better than five pounds.

Adams caught the biggest bass of the first day, a 6-pound, 1-ounce linker, and he finished with a 5-fish limit that weighed 20 pounds, 13 ounces.

Alabama angler Kevin Hawk is a distant second with 15-7.
Two more North Carolina fishermen are in the top five: Pete Bejte of Charlotte is fourth with 12-8, and Alvin Shaw of State Road is tied for fifth with 12-7.

Adams caught the 6-1 bass and another 4-1/2-pounder sight-fishing for big female bass that are spawning.

On the co-angler side, Tom McDermott of Madison, N.C. is first with a 3-fish limit weighing 7 pounds, 10 ounces, and Preston Harris of State Road is third with 6-13. McDermott fished out of the back of Adams’ boat on the first day.
