South Carolina teams took first place in both the amateur and professional divisions of the at the June 4-5 Crappie USA Super Event on Clarks Hill Lake.
Kenny Eargle of Leesville and Brad Soper of Batesburg won with a weight of 22.01 pounds and took home $3,000. They also took the big-fish award with a 2.09-pound crappie and received an extra $112. They caught their fish about 25 feet deep in the Savannah River channel.
Leonard Frick and Kimberly Maroney of Leesville came in second with 17.3 pounds and won $2,000. They caught most of their fish around docks.
John Moses of Simpsonville and Tip and Jacob Forrester of Traveler’s Rest took fifth with 12.17.
In the amateur division, Brian Davis and Brian Davis Jr. of Leesville finished first with a weight of 18.02 pounds, winning $1,500. They also had the second big fish at 2.06 and won another $48. They caught most of their fish around deep brushpiles with live minnows.
The Davises had the second-place big fish with a 2.06-pound crappie and won an extra $48. They fished around Bigheart, targeting brushpiles in 25 feet of water with live minnows. The team caught around 150 fish in the two days of fishing.
Leland and Dorothy Wood of Aiken took third place with a weight of 14.75 pounds and earned $500. Tommy Slice of Irmo was fourth with 14.06 pounds.
Three pros qualify for Bassmasters Classic
Three South Carolina pros have qualified for the Bassmaster Classic: Casey Ashley from Donalds, Davy Hite from Ninety Six and Marty Robinson from Lyman. This will be Ashley’s fourth, Hite’s 14th and Robinson’s first Classic appearance.
The Bassmaster Classic, the “Super Bowl of Bass Fishing” will be held at Shreveport-Bossier City, La., on Feb. 24-26, with a first place prize of $500,000.
Ashley and Hite finished seventh and eighth in the Bass Angler of the Year standings. Each won a Bass Elite Series tournament, which carried an automatic Classic berth.
Robinson finished 35th in the Elite Series standings to earn his berth. Jason Quinn of York, Andy Montgomery and Jason Williamson just missed qualifying, finishing 40th, 41st and 43rd in the standings.
Kevin VanDam won the Angler of the Year award for the fourth-straight year.
Taylors win striper tournament
The father-and-son team of Barry Taylor and Dustin Taylor of Greer weighed in 33.2 pounds to take first place in the Greenville Striper Kings club tournament June 18 on Lake Hartwell.
The Taylors anchored over a hump in 40 feet of water and caught their 4-fish limit in 30 minutes on cut herring.
Scott Perry and Mike Jones of Simpsonville took second with 31.85 pounds. Perry took the big-fish award for his 19.75-pound striper. Mike Barnett and Bill Sharah of Spartanburg were fourth with 30.95.
Gagliardi cashes in FLW event
Anthony Gagliardi of Prosperity had the best finish among South Carolina pros at the FLW Tour event on Kentucky Lake in mid-June, finishing 17th with 35.1 pounds for $11,360.
Todd Auten of Lake Wylie took 58th with 25.11, and Jay Keith of Camden finished 60th with 25.04. Both won $3,733.
Martin has great Father’s Day
Rebecca Martin gave her dad, Larry Martin, a great Father’s Day present, teaming with him in a couples’ bass tournament on Lake Hartwell and winning.
The Martins, from Anderson, won the American Bass Anglers Couples Tournament with 27.8 pounds.
Krista and Deon Johnson of Anderson of Anderson took second with 22.0; they both won big-fish awards with 4.6- and 4.9-pound bass.
Topwaters produce for Crampton
Aaron Crampton of Hartwell, Ga., fished Flukes and Spooks to win the VisionCasters Ministry Open on Lake Hartwell June 18. He weighed in 15.47 pounds, catching his fish over deep points between 6 and 10 a.m.
Jim Rutledge of Anderson was second with 14.27, followed by Jeff Rohaley and Baron Aiken of Greenville with 13.98, Mack McCall and John McCoen of Greenville with 13.55 and Jordan Carter and William Dudley of Hartwell with 13.54.
Dixie High School wins state junior event
The Bass Federation of South Carolina Junior Championship was held on Lake Murray on May 21, with six youth bass fishing clubs and one Federation junior club competing.
Dixie High School won the team title with 22.9 pounds. Six students competed from Dixie, with two — Alex Davenport with 6.17 in the 11-14 age group and Kameron Harbin with 9.96 in the 12-18 age group — winning their divisions.
